The Science of Active Learning

Put Information into Practice

Research tells us that we learn best when we put new information into practice right away. Our brains integrate and recall concepts more easily when we think them through—unpacking their implications—and when we actively associate them with what we already know.

Build Associations

Active learning sets up situations that require us to process new information and build associations. For example, if we are learning about negotiation, we might be asked to role-play a negotiation with classmates. Afterward, we might discuss how the simulated negotiation compared to a real situation encountered in our lives.
